My reply:
What Fashion Design is about: You basically design and make garments. The process of designing garments include the process of conceptualization, mind mapping, brainstorming, forecasting trends and colours, choosing fabrics, illustrating the the concept in the form of a garment, later make the patterns or draping it and finally stitching it out. It’s all about fashion and garment industry. Few of the subjects that we learn include Draping, Pattern Making, Garment Construction, Fashion Illustration, Elements of Textiles, History of Fashion and Design and Prototype Development. While different career options includes, becoming a fashion designer, working in a production house, freelancing, etc..etc..

Why choose FD: Most students probably give the NIFT entrance just because they think being a fashion designer is cool or just because they think fashion designers can make easy money or may be just because they are good at illustration and creative thinking. You need a passion for fashion. You are gonna work in textile industry for rest of your life! Fashion illustration is just a part of the curriculum, while we mainly concentrate in making patterns and stitch garments. Its about how you put your creative skills into making a garment. And, being a fashion designer is no where as glamorous as it sounds. You work 24*7. You don’t have time for anything else. You’ll have to live along with the smell of muslin. In short, you work your ass out! And it’ll be fun only if you are ‘actually’ interested in this field or the fashion industry.
Approach to become a Fashion Designer: It’s very important to develop an eye for fashion. Movies and magazine may help building your knowledge on fashion industry. Watching FTV is no crime as it’s considered in Indian society! You actually get to see designs from all over the world and you get an idea of designer’s approach and the amazing garments that they come up with. Keep reading online resources like Style.com and other fashion blogs which keep you updated.
May be you should join a good coaching center and start preparing for the entrance 😉
And… your salary would be decided after you complete 4yrs of graduation while you sit for your placements 😉 😛
HOPE THIS HELPS!
